About Me!

Hello! My name is Omaira Noori. I am a first-year Sociology major at UC Irvine. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I have lived there all of my life. I am the only girl in my family of five. I am the first in my immediate family to move away from home for college, so this experience has been a blessing, but also quite nerve-wracking for my family. I am an Afghan-American. Both my mother and my father were born and raised in Afghanistan and they have both made sure that my brothers and I have maintained our ability to speak our mother-tongue and thus, I am bilingual (I can speak English and Dari fluently). I am a very family-oriented person, so many of my hobbies include outdoor activities like biking and hiking with my family. Some of the activities that I enjoy doing by myself are writing journalistic pieces, going jogging, and exploring scenic places. I have always enjoyed the world of reading and writing and discovering the depths of literature, which is why I decided to take Humanities Core. I am looking forward to a year that will not allow me to grow in my writing and reading comprehension skills through fascinating works of literature and stimulating discussion, but I am also looking forward to learning about the complex nature of war, especially since my family comes from a nation inflicted by the brutalities of war. Through this blog, I hope to post enthralling pieces about the literature we will be exploring throughout the course and incorporate it into discussions about humanity’s relationship with the world of war.
